How Chattanooga Arrests Work
Chattanooga Police officers handle most arrests inside the city. CPD serves as the primary arresting agency. Booking is a county job, though. HCSO Corrections states that every Hamilton County arrestee goes to the Hamilton County Jail & Detention Center, no matter which agency made the arrest. CPD does not operate that facility. One Chattanooga arrest can therefore leave a CPD incident report and a separate HCSO booking record.
Chattanooga is Hamilton County's seat and largest city. The 2020 Census counted 181,099 residents. CPD's February 2026 arrest-practices clarification called Chattanooga the county's most populous city with the highest daily volume, and said CPD makes more arrests than any other local agency. That statement is dated context. It is not a live count.
Each Chattanooga arrest still leaves two records behind. The city report and the county booking file sit with different offices.
Where Chattanooga Arrests Appear
CPD publishes no daily booking roster for the city. No rolling blotter or public mugshot feed appears on its police pages either. The county sheriff therefore carries the main daily and current-custody channels for Chattanooga arrests. Local publisher sites follow later. They do not replace the official sources.
| Channel | Official? | Use |
|---|---|---|
| HCSO Booking Reports | Yes | Selected-date Chattanooga and county bookings |
| HCSO Inmate Information | Yes | Current Hamilton County jail custody |
| CPD report request | Yes | City incident and arrest reports |
| Chattanooga Open Records | Yes | Formal city records route |
| Chattanooga Sentinel | No | Countywide booking archive with photos |
| The Chattanoogan | No | Periodic county reports with city agency fields |
| WDEF and NewsChannel 9 | No | Selected event-driven stories |
Secondary pages run late, drop entries, or keep them under the publisher's own rules. Treat them as leads. Use a match to spot a possible event or date, then take the question back to HCSO, CPD, or the court.
Find an Arrested Chattanooga Person
Start a Chattanooga arrest lookup at the county level. HCSO controls jail booking, so custody answers live there. The city report matters once the incident narrative itself is what you need.
- Search HCSO Booking Reports for the expected calendar date, including an adjacent day when the arrest occurred near midnight.
- Compare the name, age at arrest, arresting agency, committal time, address fields, and charges.
- Search HCSO Inmate Information by last name or SPN for present custody.
- Request the CPD incident or arrest report from the city and the booking document or photo from the proper HCSO custodian.
- Check the Hamilton County Criminal Court Clerk or CJUS for the later case and disposition.
The official Chattanooga Police page provides the department's public contact and report routes.

CPD's page covers the city incident-record layer. HCSO stays the booking source. For photos, roster fields, and custody states explained at the county level, use the Hamilton County mugshots and booking-photo section.

CPD's Police Services Center sits at 3410 Amnicola Highway. Dial 423-643-5000 for report status. Non-emergency police matters go to 423-698-2525. A request can start at the CPD police-report request page or the City Open Records Center, and the City Attorney's office also handles formal open-records help.

The City Attorney and Open Records office sits at City Hall Annex, 100 East 11th Street, Suite 200, Chattanooga, TN 37402. Call 423-643-8250. Hours run Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. No booking-photo turnaround is promised.
Name the record precisely. Say whether it is the incident report or another city record, and list a name, date range, location, and any incident or report number. The booking report and intake photo sit with HCSO instead. That split matters. Asking one office for both, without explanation, slows routing.
The Chattanooga Open Records page lays out the municipal process.

This city channel covers CPD records, not HCSO bookings.
Chattanooga Arrest Photos and Timing
HCSO booking includes fingerprints, a mug shot, and entry into the arrest system. Photos take time. The PIO policy generally releases mugshots to local media three to four hours after booking. Queue length, staffing, and priority all shift that window. The public date report shows text only. No photo sits beside each entry.
A missing photo does not mean none was taken. Ask HCSO Records. Staff can say whether the sheriff keeps the image, the media system carries it, or another custodian holds it. A newspaper or archive copy is never final.
The booking report can also lag a physical arrival at the jail. HCSO's system is online 24 hours a day. No posting deadline is promised. Search the selected-date feed and the current inmate list, or call 423-209-7125 for urgent custody questions.
Chattanooga Arrest News Coverage
The Chattanooga Sentinel keeps a day-by-day arrest archive countywide. Entries can carry agency labels, photos, charges, age, and arrest date. Its archive starts in 2025. Expunged entries are hidden there. The Chattanoogan posts text arrest reports now and then, with fields that resemble HCSO records, while WDEF and NewsChannel 9 cover selected incidents rather than complete daily rosters.
Timing and removal rules vary by outlet. A newsroom story may run days after the booking. Commercial county pages from Busted Newspaper, RecentlyBooked, and Arrests.org are unofficial too. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office and the courts hold the authoritative records.
Corrections start with the official source. HCSO says it pulls its system mugshot once an expungement order is completed, though private copies stay online unless the publisher acts. Use a publisher's current free correction policy and legal documents afterward. A payment demand is never required by law to fix a record.
CPD Arrest Policy and Jail Handoff
CPD put out a clarification on February 11, 2026. It says officers do not arrest or detain anyone over citizenship or immigration status. The department is not taking part in immigration enforcement. Federal notification questions, as CPD framed them, come up only after a person is transferred to the county jail. The sheriff runs a 287(g) jail model. That model touches people already held on state charges.
So the divide is a custody handoff. It is not a blanket label for every Chattanooga arrest. CPD keeps its own enforcement and incident record. HCSO runs jail intake and may handle later holds. BOP and ICE locators sit in separate federal systems. They cannot replace a local booking search.
Policies shift, so weigh the dated CPD statement against the current city page whenever the issue matters. For one person's record, trust the specific official custody, court, or agency source rather than a policy inference.
After a Chattanooga Arrest
The Hamilton County Criminal Court Clerk sits at 600 Market Street and keeps the later criminal case record. Misdemeanors, traffic offenses, and preliminary felony hearings go to General Sessions Criminal. Criminal Court handles state cases after indictment, presentment, information, or appeal. CJUS can lag 24 to 48 hours. Sealed or confidential cases may not appear at all. The online Sessions dockets are informational only and can change on the original record. Search with more than one criterion when you can.
A disposition is the outcome. Dismissal, diversion, plea, acquittal, or judgment all count. A released person can drop off the live roster while the booking and court records live on. A state felony sentence can land someone in TDOC FOIL, which may show a profile photo. That is not where to start. Neither fits a fresh Chattanooga arrest.
Note: The city report, county booking, custody entry, and court disposition are related records, and none of them replaces all the others.
